Okay folks, if you haven’t bought Valve’s hit game “Portal” yet… get to downloading.
Until May 24th, Portal is available for free on steam. Download it now. And since Valve has now adapted Steam and some games to support Mac, you Mac users can now play this great game for free as well.
It didn’t really occur to me when I first heard his name. I was at work when the news programs that recycle every hour were playing in the background. They mostly spoke of his time on I Spy with Bill Cosby.
But he played a much more interesting role for gamers, particularly for fans of the Half-Life series.
Robert Culp, the voice of Doctor Breen, passed away yesterday at the age of 79. He apparently fell and struck his head outside his home.
Our best wishes are with his family. He will be missed in the computer game and 3D entertainment world as well as the television and film industry.
Depending on how well you have been following Team Fortress news recently, then you may or may not know of the “friendship” issue.
Apparently, in a recent update, some announcer sounds were added to the stock supply with no explanations. This, of course, led to wild speculation including the idea of red/blu cooperative play against the announcer.
Of course, Kotaku then reported that Valve has denied that and other rumors. Instead, they put extra emphasis on the subject of for whom the sounds toll.
Well, there has been another update and for a site like BWL it fits quite well.
The TF2 blog has been updated with a semi-explanatory teaser comic [which they linked to saying “Friendship ends in one day.”
Three points stand out to me upon reading this comic. First, more game companies need to post comics for teasers to their new content.
Second, this appears to indicate that there will be a sort-of sub-competition with special rewards for playing and fighting your steam friends in-game.
Third, Valve is directly using fan-art for character designs now. Not really a surprise as they have always used that sort of community inclusion. They did already have the artist visit their home base and they did sort of hint at the use of the design once before Halloween.
What’s that? What do I mean by “fan-art for character designs”? You’re one of the people that hasn’t already heard this story or seen the original drawing?
And, as I said, it is to be expected given Valve’s tendencies for community “friendship”. Especially since other artists had already jumped on the concept to make their own Announcer/administrator images.
It seems the little update plan Valve came up with was a competition. Best stereotype wins.
Huh? Oh… okay…
The idea is for players to choose either demo or soldier and try to kill the other class. This will determine which class, demo or soldier, gets a new “EXCLUSIVE, SECRET EXTRA WEAPON UNLOCK” during a new double update.
A new update is on the way. And this one doesn’t feature a single class upgrade. Instead, the next update is a so-called “classless update“.
Day 1 features the addition of 18 new hats.
Additionally, another community map is on its way to official TF2 circles. Arena Offblast. This map is based on the oldest of Bond Villain base concepts. A mountain, hollowed out and filled with nuclear missiles.
Check back later for more updates.
UPDATE:
Day 2 of the Classless update includes a look at the new King of the Hill game mode. Teams must face off on one capture point and successfully capture and hold that point for 3 minutes.
Included with King of the Hill is a new KOTH map called Viaduct and a KOTH version of Nucleus and Sawmill.
Alliteration is… getting a little old these days, thanks.
This news has been around since the 4th of August, but I just now read about it. Valve has announced a new DLC for Left 4 Dead that will add a two map campaign between No Mercy and Death Toll.
The idea is to fill in the enormous gap in story between escaping in a helicopter and suddenly walking down an old roadway. I’d say, given this is coming out now instead of back in May when Left 4 Dead 2 was announced, that Valve is also trying to prove that they intend to support Left 4 Dead even with a new game on the way.
Crash Course is designed for Versus Mode but can be played in Campaign and Survivor Modes as well. The point is that they designed these maps to play faster because players don’t really like to sit down and play through each “chapter” a couple of times and stretch an already 1 hour journey into an even longer event.
This is estimated to take about half the time a normal versus campaign would, because most players quit after that. We’ll have to wait and see if their new maps and weapon drop locations and what-not will help alleviate rage quitting. I could say much about rage quitting and why it exists, but I think we’ll save that for another time.
This new campaign has been previewed over on destructoid.com. Be warned, however, it contains campaign spoilers.
